Currently, around six million Palestinians and six million Jews inhabit an area of roughly 12,000 square miles. Logically, neither group is going to pack up and allow the other to move in unchallenged. I’m cautious of any ideology that denies the other side’s historical connection to the land. This is a deeply rooted conflict that must end with negotiations where both sides can coexist peacefully. Otherwise, the land will be so damaged that neither group will want to live there. The notion that Palestinians don’t exist and are just part of a larger, indistinct Arab Muslim group that should have handled them is unhelpful. Similarly, claiming that Israelis are white settler colonialists who should return to Europe is equally absurd. The European Jews came to Israel from places like Auschwitz, and about half of Israeli Jews are Sephardic Arabs who have just as much right to the land as anyone else. In my view, Hamas needs to go, but so does Netanyahu. It’s time to try something different rather than continuing with this losing cycle.
