I think that the quantum double slit experiment would imply that the material universe is cognizant of, and reacts to, a conscious entity measuring it. That would suggest that consciousness is more than just an emerging property of a random material universe of sparsely separated atoms. As for religion, the best way to think of it is the form of great epics that give our life meaning. A society absent of religion is much like a kitchen devoid of a spice rack. Yes, you have food, but nothing too appetizing. The Soviet Union was the best example of such a society. Take your own religious tradition and imagine your life devoid of the Book of Job - that does not sound very appealing.
