The fundamental unit of governance remains the nation-state, not the Muslim world, regional alliances, the EU, NATO, or the broader international community. With figures like Donald Trump, the nation-state is only becoming more entrenched as the primary focus. This creates an inherent contradiction: the U.S. cannot simultaneously expel Palestinians from its borders—likely sending them to Gaza or the West Bank—while pressuring Egypt, Jordan, or Turkey to take them in. Every argument you present is compelling. Innocent people will inevitably suffer under a full-scale blockade; that is the grim reality of war, whether in Ukraine, South Sudan, or elsewhere. But conflicts like these are not problems to be solved—only managed—because no one is willing to bear the cost of resolution. Trump’s so-called “Gaza Riviera” is perhaps the most absurd proposal yet, made even more so by the fact that he is actively defunding the very organs of the larger international community—such as the UN, NATO, and USAID—that would be essential in addressing the crisis.
