This conflict presents a harsh and unavoidable reality. Hamas is ruthless, disregarding basic rules of warfare, and enjoys near-total support in Gaza. Yet neither Israel nor the U.S. can realistically wipe out or forcibly remove over two million people without triggering a global crisis—potentially a world war—or severe economic retaliation from Gulf States, akin to the 1973 oil embargo. Turkey could also be drawn into direct military conflict. Mass relocation is equally unrealistic, as no Arab nation would risk taking in two million displaced Palestinians and destabilizing their own government. In an era focused on restricting immigration, forcibly imposing refugees elsewhere is a nonstarter—Trump’s so-called Gaza resort idea is dead on arrival. The fact remains that Gaza has long functioned as a holding ground for displaced Palestinians, and however devastating the situation, it will likely remain so. Any realistic solution must start from that recognition.
