We must always be vigilant against the rise of the priestly class in our society—those who claim to serve lofty ideals but whose true motives are often far more grounded in material power. When someone tacks the word “officer” onto their title, it’s rarely good news for the rest of us. Yes, society has real problems—racism, sexism, inequality—but trouble begins when groups rally behind figures of authority who make it their mission to police these issues. Power always hungers for more power. These self-appointed moral crusaders share two traits: an utter lack of humor and a grim delight in punishing so-called offenders. Whether it’s a DEI officer, a Republican Senator grilling TikTok’s CEO, a Grand Inquisitor torturing the innocent, or a pious Reverend hanging a witch, the motivation remains the same—power and collective cruelty, all disguised as righteousness.
